Life stories

After filming

Post production on a biography takes about 2 months to 10 weeks. During this time, all the material is carefully viewed, logged and captured. The feature-length narrative is then constructed, and broken down into chapters which each have their own dramatic contours. (The separation into different chapters also makes it easier for the viewer to navigate through the film, selecting particular sections, for example, which he or she may wish to watch.) As the film is compiled, any "glitches" are edited out - which means that the story teller need not feel under any pressure to be word perfect during the filming process. He or she is free to repeat and reword sentences when not satisfied with the way something has been put across.

It is important not to rush the editing. By taking time to develop a deep and intimate understanding of the material, one is allowed to discover the essential threads of the story, and to mould it in a dramatically satisfying way - instead of forcing or pre-imposing the shape. This is what gives the story its power, uniqueness and sense of "truthfulness". Through subtle editing choices, themes emerge quite naturally and become enhanced, bringing an extra dimension to the story. The rhythm of the story, overall, and from moment to moment, is then gradually fine-tuned.

Editing, for me, is in some ways like sculpting. Michelangelo, for example, would never force a design on a piece of marble. He would enter a "dialogue" with it, "listening" to it as he chiseled , feeling its inner grain, to reveal the perfect version of the statue that lay within that particular piece of marble.

I have a background in the study of literature, as well as my extensive experience of working closely with some of South Africa's most talented writers, shaping their screenplays in preparation for filming. This story telling strength of mine is an invaluable component in the process of building and shaping the "architecture" of the narrative. I also do extensive research into the period and place in which the different chapters of someone's life have happened, judiciously incorporating additional photographs - and archival footage, if available - and music from the time.

After post-production, you will receive a beautifully packaged DVD set - a portrait of your life, carefully observed and shaped with sensitivity and power by and experienced filmmaker.
